Protect your bright smile by following these simple aftercare instructions for optimal results.
Congratulations on your brighter smile! After a whitening treatment, your teeth will be a little more sensitive and vulnerable to staining for the first 48 hours. It’s important to take a few simple precautions during this time to help your teeth stay their brightest for longer.
For the next couple of days, try to avoid foods and drinks that are dark or highly pigmented. This includes coffee, tea, cola, red wine, dark berries like blueberries and blackberries, and rich sauces like soy sauce or ketchup. These can easily stain your teeth while they are still sensitive and porous from the whitening process. Even smoking or chewing tobacco can cause discoloration, so it’s best to steer clear until the sensitivity lessens.
Think of it like avoiding anything that would stain your clothes — your teeth can react the same way, especially right after whitening.
If you were provided with custom trays to use at home, following the instructions is key for safe and effective results. Place a small amount of the bleaching gel in the centre of each tooth area in the tray — just enough so the gel sits against the front surfaces of your teeth. Avoid putting too much gel, as it can spill over and irritate your gums.
Wear the trays for the amount of time your dentist recommended. Wearing them too long won’t speed up whitening and can increase sensitivity.
After removing the trays, rinse your mouth with lukewarm water to wash away any leftover gel. Then, gently brush your teeth with a soft toothbrush to clear any remaining residue. Make sure to clean your trays thoroughly after each use — rinse them with cool water and keep them in a clean case until next time.
Drinking plenty of water after your whitening session helps rinse away staining particles and keeps your mouth fresh. If you notice sensitivity, avoid very hot or cold foods and drinks for a day or two.
By following these simple steps, you’ll help your smile stay dazzling and avoid stains while your teeth adjust. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to Chelmsford Family Dental. We’re here to help you enjoy your best smile!
